Modern Adoption - openness, inclusiveness, decision making & more
Adoption has changed a lot over the years. The old models that worked primarily inside of a framework of closed adoptions, with the birth parent(s) having little control over the adoption of their child have been replaced by models that provide for collaboration, communication, planning, and stability. These new processes which began in the 1970’s and have continued to expand in openness have yielded better outcomes for children & families.
Starr Adoption Services recognizes and honors the first family for every child & the efforts that are made to maintain the child with that family, but there are times in which expectant parents believe that the best decision for themselves and their child is to explore adoption. Roughly 1/3 of all adoptions in the United States are private adoptions. These adoptions are based on the expectant parents feelings that adoption is the right decision for themselves and their child and are moved forward by a parent voluntarily signing adoption consents and/or relinquishments.
Some expectant parents know early in their pregnancy that adoption is the path for them. Other expectant parents may not consider adoption until late in their pregnancy, or after parenting for a timeframe. Whenever you make the decision for yourself, your timing is honored by Starr Adoption Services.
Modern Adoptions are the most collaborative we have seen. Roughly 95% have openness ranging from letters, cards, and updates to in-person visits. The goal is to allow the child to have an understanding of their first family, the positive reasons why the parent decided to make an adoption plan, and the parents continued love and support of the child. At Starr Adoption Services we encourage expectant parents to select the adoptive family (we will provide adoption ready families to you that best meet your criteria of characteristics you hope for in a family). We also work with you to establish a Post Adoption Communication Agreement & to help advocate for the best interest of your child. These types of adoptions allow the child to feel support & love from all the important people in their life, understand their story, and to grow with feelings of wholeness.
